When the people of India returned from war, they continue to be treated as second class citizens. Acts of Violence occurred against British protesting the treatment which resulted in the Rowlett Acts -Allowed British to jail protesters for 2 years without trial. To protest the Rowlett Acts 10,000 Hindus and Muslims went to the city of Amritsar, in 1919. The British fearing an uprising fired on the crowd. The British killed 400 killed and wounded 1,200 resulting in the Amritsar Massacre. The anti-imperialism movement found steam after this event.
Many joined the Indian National Congress. This was a political party founded in 1885. It's primary purpose was to gain independence from the British. The London educated lawyer, Mohandas Gandhi becomes the leader of the party and encourages peaceful protests of unjust laws calling for boycotts and demonstrations.
