Proxy Wars
The United States and the Soviet Union armed and supported rival countries and factions in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. That support from the superpowers sometimes resulted in conflicts called Proxy Wars. One of the reasons to support other countries was not only to spread their ideology but to avoid direct military confrontations that could lead to nuclear war. Both the Soviet Union and the US wanted to take advantage of a regional conflict to expand its military power and ideological influence.
However there were states that chose not to align themselves with either one of the two superpowers. Those countries were called non-aligned states. Non-aligned countries argued that they should align instead with themselves in mutual interest. They also were against imperialism. See the videos below to get further information on each of those hotspots.
