On 7 March 1936 German troops marched into the Rhineland looking from Lebensraum or Living space. This action was directly against the Treaty of Versailles which had laid out the terms which the defeated Germany had accepted. This move threw the European allies, especially France and Britain, into confusion. The allies decided on a policy of appeasement - pacifying an Germany through negotiation in order to prevent war during the Munich Conference in 1938.

On March 14th 1939, Hitler’s forces invade and occupy Czechoslovakia. They took over Bohemia, and established a protectorate over Slovakia. Hitler's invasion of Czechoslovakia was the end of appeasement. It proved that Hitler had been lying at Munich
