Ottoman Empire Broken Up
Fall of the Ottoman Empire
The fall of the Ottomans created a lot of land to be taken as mandates. Palestine, Transjordan, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq became virtual colonies of Great Britain. This made Arabs angry and encouraged Pan-Arabism which called for the unification of all lands in North Africa and the Middle East.
The Belford Declaration was a British promise to set aside Palestine to Jews. This declaration further infuriated Muslims creating tensions against imperial powers.
