West Africa
The anti-imperialist nationalist movement began with European-educated intellectuals. For example, Jomo Kenyatta studied in London and would become the future leader of Kenya. Leopold Senghor studied in Paris and would become the leader of Senegal. After WWI, West Africans began to protest for their independence. In 1917 railway workers in West Africa wen on strike. They were protesting continued discrimination and low wages in European owned railways. In 1946 there was a general strike- strike of workers from many sectors of the economy. In many cases, the strikes led to some small changes.
However, the colonial system remained and Africans would not get independence until after WWII.
